it's been a long time.
i just wanted to put up a poem i wrote an insanely long time ago.
Truth
The castle was quiet and dark
The décor was untouched
Perfect, as always
The air was still
No sound was made
Even though there were people everywhere
People, bustling here and there
People, speaking to each other
But no sound was made- lips moved, but nothing was heard.
She ran down the hall
Her long gown sweeping the hall as she flew past
Her heels slapping the cold, hard stone, echoing off the walls
She made noise
Shaking the ornaments that were elegantly placed throughout the corridors
They smashed to the ground, no longer perfect.
Her curls fell out of their meticulous style
The hair combs fell out, the delicate jewels shattering as they hit the ground
She looked disheveled, not the material of a courtier
She made noise
She ran screaming throughout the castle
But no one turned
The other courtiers did not notice
Their smiles would not fade.
Hers had faded long ago
She was through with the routine
She was through with the tradition
She was through with the façade
Tearing through the halls, screaming ”Listen to me!”
She did not matter, no one paid her attention
They continued smiling
As it was their purpose
To please someone else
Sprinting through the castle
She passed a mirror
She stopped dead in her tracks.
In the mirror was her true self:
Long, golden curls out of place
The cosmetics had worn off her face
Her exquisite gown was torn from when she ran
She had thrown off her heels, she was her true height
She was herself.
No longer a courtier
Forced to smile
Forced to laugh
But free.
She was liberated from the weights that had held her down
She took a deep breath, and she turned around.
The torches that had barely been burning suddenly burst into flame
Sconces fell to the floor, as the fire spread
She walked calmly throughout the abandoned halls
Now she heard screaming.
The fire grabbed the tapestries
The flames licked the furnishings and spread everywhere
The others were yelling
She was strolling through the palace
As if the world was perfect.
As the castle crumbled to ash, she couldn’t hear a thing
She stepped into winter
And laughed
She smiled as she spun in the falling snow
And as the cold embraced her
She never felt warmer.
